The Basics

What Is the Schengen Tourist Visa — and Why Does It Matter?

If Europe is your destination, the Schengen Visa is arguably the most powerful document a traveler can hold. One visa. One application. One approval. Access to 27 of the world's most breathtaking countries.

The Schengen Area: 27 Countries, One Seamless Journey

The Schengen Agreement created a borderless travel zone across most of continental Europe. As an Indian passport holder, a single Schengen tourist visa allows you to move freely between member states without encountering border checks — from the French Riviera to the Swiss Alps to the streets of Rome — all on one stamp.

27 Member Countries
90 Max Days Stay
180 Day Reference Period
€90 Adult Visa Fee
🇦🇹 Austria 🇧🇪 Belgium 🇨🇿 Czech Republic 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇫🇮 Finland 🇫🇷 France 🇩🇪 Germany 🇬🇷 Greece 🇭🇺 Hungary 🇮🇸 Iceland 🇮🇹 Italy 🇱🇻 Latvia 🇱🇹 Lithuania 🇱🇺 Luxembourg 🇲🇹 Malta 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇳🇴 Norway 🇵🇱 Poland 🇵🇹 Portugal 🇸🇰 Slovakia 🇸🇮 Slovenia 🇪🇸 Spain 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🇱🇮 Liechtenstein 🇪🇪 Estonia

Which consulate should Indian travelers apply through? You must apply at the consulate or visa application centre of the Schengen country where you plan to spend the majority of your trip. If you are transiting multiple countries equally, apply through the country of your first entry. Applications are submitted through VFS Global centres across India.

⚠️ Critical Rule: If you plan to continue your journey to a non-Schengen country (such as the UK, USA, or Canada) after leaving the Schengen Area, you must obtain the visa for that country before applying for your Schengen visa. Photocopies of any valid UK, USA, or Canadian visas must be included in your Schengen application.

Documentation

The Complete Schengen Tourist Visa Document Checklist

European consulates are meticulous. The order, format, and completeness of your documents are evaluated as carefully as the content itself. Please submit all documents in the exact sequence listed below and do not staple any documents.

Issued within the last 10 years

Must carry at least 3 months' validity beyond your planned return date from the Schengen Area.

Minimum two blank pages

Required for visa stamps and endorsements at ports of entry.

Passports with observations or corrections on the personal data page are not accepted.

Previous passports (if any)

Photocopies of first and last pages

Clear photocopies of the bio-data (first) page and last page of the passport.

2
Passport Size Photographs
2 PHOTOS
White background, taken within the last 6 months

Size 35–40mm in width. Must be original prints — not scanned, photocopied, or digitally altered.

Clearly state your purpose of travel, detailed day-wise travel plan, cities to be visited, planned activities, and your clear intention to return to India on completion of your trip.

Family applications

If submitting applications for family members, every application packet must include a copy of the personal covering letter.

5
Employer / Introduction Letter
ORIGINAL
On official company letterhead

Signed and stamped by your HR department or directorate. Must mention your designation, duration of employment, salary, approved leave dates, and a formal No Objection Statement (NOC) for your planned travel to the Schengen Area.

Must include dates and purpose of the trip

The letter must explicitly confirm the exact travel dates and confirm the employee will return to duty upon conclusion of the trip.

6

Minimum coverage of €30,000 / USD 50,000 / CHF 50,000 per person for the entire duration of your stay.

Coverage scope

Must cover all expenses arising from medical emergencies, urgent hospital treatment, emergency medical repatriation, and evacuation — throughout the Schengen territory.

Multi-entry visa applicants

For 6-month or 1-year multiple-entry visa applications, insurance covering only the first journey is sufficient — full 180 or 365-day coverage is not mandatory.

7
Flight Reservation
ALL TRAVELERS NAMED
Confirmed round-trip flight booking

Names of all travelers must exactly match passport details. Both outbound and return flights must be clearly shown.

Timelines

Processing Timeline, Visa Validity & Important Dates

Up to 90

🗓️
6 Months
Earliest Application Window

Standard processing for most Schengen tourist applications from India takes 15 to 22 working days from the date of biometric submission at the VFS Visa Application Centre. During peak travel periods (May–August and December–January), volumes increase and processing may extend accordingly.

Our strong recommendation: Submit your application at least 4–6 weeks before your intended travel date. Schengen applications may be submitted up to 6 months in advance — early applicants enjoy more flexibility, faster appointment availability, and a safer buffer for any document requests from the consulate.

Visa Validity At a Glance

Tourist visas are typically granted for the duration of your planned trip, up to 90 days. Visa validity is at the consulate's discretion and is based on your itinerary, financial strength, and travel history. Repeat travelers with strong Schengen or international travel history are often considered for multiple-entry or longer-validity visas.

From Our Visa Specialists

10 Expert Tips to Maximize Your Approval Chances

Over a decade of handling Schengen visa applications has taught us what consulates truly look for — and what makes an application stand out. Here are the insights that make the difference between approval and rejection.

Apply at the consulate of the country where you will spend the most nights. If time is evenly split, apply through the country of first entry into the Schengen Area. Applying through the wrong country's consulate can result in automatic rejection, regardless of how strong your application is.
The consulate must be confident that you will return home after your trip. Strong ties include stable employment with a regular salary, ownership of property in India, family dependents, ongoing education, or an active business. Highlight these compellingly in your covering letter — supported by documentation.
Bank statements should show regular, consistent income credits and a stable balance history. Avoid large, unexplained deposits made immediately before the application — consulates interpret these as attempts to artificially inflate your account. A genuinely maintained balance is far more persuasive. For a solo traveler, a minimum of ₹50,000–₹75,000 is generally advisable, with proportionally higher amounts for families.
Vague plans are a red flag. Your itinerary should show specific cities you'll visit on each date, planned sights and experiences, how you'll travel between destinations (train, flight, bus), and realistic time allocations. An itinerary that's geographically logical and well-paced projects genuine intent and solid trip planning.
Dates in your cover letter, flight bookings, hotel reservations, employer leave approval, and itinerary must align perfectly. Any inconsistency — even a one-day difference between your stated travel dates and your booked flights — raises concerns. Consulates cross-check everything.
Last-minute applications create pressure and eliminate your ability to resolve issues if the consulate requests additional documents. Applying 4–6 weeks before your travel date gives you a comfortable buffer. For summer travel (June–August), apply even earlier as appointment slots fill quickly.
If your passport carries previous visa stamps from countries with strict requirements — USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan — this significantly strengthens your Schengen application. Past travel demonstrates compliance with visa conditions and an established pattern of legitimate international travel. Always include copies of valid foreign visas.
If you have received a Schengen visa rejection within the past 2 years, you must include the refusal notice and a written explanation of why you believe the previous refusal was issued and how you've addressed those concerns. Attempting to conceal a refusal is far more damaging than honestly addressing it.
Well-organized, clearly legible, professionally presented documents create a positive first impression. Avoid handwritten additions, blurry photocopies, or haphazardly arranged papers. Submit documents in the exact order required by the consulate — this is where Beyond Travels' expertise adds significant, measurable value.
European consulates operate with advanced verification systems and access to extensive international databases. Any false information or fraudulent documentation is not only grounds for immediate rejection but can result in multi-year visa bans across the entire Schengen Area. Honesty, even when your situation is less than ideal, is always the correct strategy.
Avoid These

Common Mistakes That Lead to Schengen Visa Rejections

Understanding what not to do is equally valuable. Here are the most frequent errors we see — and that we help our clients avoid.

Applying through the wrong country's consulate
Bank statements showing insufficient or irregular funds
Incomplete application form — unsigned, unsigned twice, or missing sections
Photographs not meeting ICAO biometric standards
Vague, generic covering letter with no specific travel details
Travel insurance below the minimum €30,000 coverage threshold
Date inconsistencies between cover letter, flights, hotel, and leave approval
Passport with insufficient remaining validity or blank pages
Large unexplained deposits made just before application
Failing to disclose previous Schengen or other visa refusals
Submitting documents in incorrect order or stapling pages
Applying too close to the intended travel date

Every single one of these errors is preventable. Working with Beyond Travels means having a professional second pair of eyes on your application before it reaches the consulate — catching and correcting issues that you might not know to look for.
