As an Indian passport holder, a single Schengen tourist visa allows you to move freely between member states without encountering border checks — from the French Riviera to the Swiss Alps to the streets of Rome — all on one stamp.
Which consulate should Indian travelers apply through? You must apply at the consulate or visa application centre of the Schengen country where you plan to spend the majority of your trip. If you are transiting multiple countries equally, apply through the country of your first entry. Applications are submitted through VFS Global centres across India.
⚠️ Critical Rule: If you plan to continue your journey to a non-Schengen country (such as the UK, USA, or Canada) after leaving the Schengen Area, you must obtain the visa for that country before applying for your Schengen visa. Photocopies of any valid UK, USA, or Canadian visas must be included in your Schengen application.
The Complete Schengen Tourist Visa Document Checklist
European consulates are meticulous. The order, format, and completeness of your documents are evaluated as carefully as the content itself. Please submit all documents in the exact sequence listed below and do not staple any documents.
Must carry at least 3 months' validity beyond your planned return date from the Schengen Area.
Required for visa stamps and endorsements at ports of entry.
Passports with observations or corrections on the personal data page are not accepted.
Bound together with a rubber band — not stapled — and submitted alongside the current passport.
Clear photocopies of the bio-data (first) page and last page of the passport.
Size 35–40mm in width. Must be original prints — not scanned, photocopied, or digitally altered.
2nd photo: clipped (not stapled or pinned) to the last page of your passport. Must comply with ICAO biometric photograph guidelines.
Downloaded free from the official Swiss Federal Administration website or the VFS portal for the relevant Schengen country.
Application signed twice by legal guardian(s). Supporting documents such as custody proof, divorce papers, or death certificate must be included where applicable.
Clearly state your purpose of travel, detailed day-wise travel plan, cities to be visited, planned activities, and your clear intention to return to India on completion of your trip.
If submitting applications for family members, every application packet must include a copy of the personal covering letter.
Signed and stamped by your HR department or directorate. Must mention your designation, duration of employment, salary, approved leave dates, and a formal No Objection Statement (NOC) for your planned travel to the Schengen Area.
The letter must explicitly confirm the exact travel dates and confirm the employee will return to duty upon conclusion of the trip.
Minimum coverage of €30,000 / USD 50,000 / CHF 50,000 per person for the entire duration of your stay.
Must cover all expenses arising from medical emergencies, urgent hospital treatment, emergency medical repatriation, and evacuation — throughout the Schengen territory.
For 6-month or 1-year multiple-entry visa applications, insurance covering only the first journey is sufficient — full 180 or 365-day coverage is not mandatory.
Names of all travelers must exactly match passport details. Both outbound and return flights must be clearly shown.
If moving between Schengen countries by internal flight, train, or rental car, proof of those bookings must also be submitted.
Booking confirmations must show guest names, property name, check-in/check-out dates, and address. Package tour confirmations and advance payment receipts are also accepted.

- Student ID card from school/college/university (for students above 16 years)
- Introduction letter from the school, college, or university
- All family applications must be submitted together at the same VFS appointment
- Only the head of the family is required to provide bank statements, ITR, insurance, and flight bookings — provided all family member names appear in each document
- Hotel bookings: if rooms are under the same booking in the head of family's name, one confirmation is sufficient for all
- Children under 18 not traveling with both parents: notarized consent letter from the non-traveling parent, with copies of both parents' passports / PAN cards / driving licenses
- Children traveling alone (unaccompanied minors): notarized consent from both parents with complete identification
